LETTER: Thoughts on the 2008 election

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 | 11:00 a.m. CDT

This letter has been edited to fix a misspelling with the writer's name.

In my allotted 250 words I am trying to weave a few ideas into a coherent thought.

With modern technology, the world has shrunk. We have instant communication with most parts of the globe, and we have worldwide trading partners. In many ways the world has become a community. We have direct contact with 188 nations who are members of the United Nations, and a stated goal of the U.N. is to create a "culture of peace."

The Old Testament predicts the coming of a Messiah, but in Biblical times many people were disappointed because they expected a Warrior King, not a Prince of Peace.

On Nov. 4 the voters in the United States have a choice of voting for a Warrior King, who reinforces the military-industrial complex that "Ike" so clearly warned about in 1961, or a community organizer, who has the potential of bringing the world more closely to a "Culture of Peace."
