COLUMBIA —The rain and dark skies outside didn't stop students from painting pumpkins for senior citizens. On Tuesday, about twenty students from Family Career and Community Leaders of America groups from Lange Middle School, Oakland Junior High School and Jefferson Junior High School gathered around tables at the Holiday Inn Select, laughing and joking about the designs on the pumpkins they were painting. Some painted faces and animals while others covered the pumpkins with color.
"The students had a lot of fun," Dave Stockman, executive recruiter for the Holiday Inn Select said. "Last year by the end, the students got a little competitive over the designs. They really enjoyed decorating them."
- Dante Churchill and Austin Nelson, both 12, paint pumpkins at the Holiday Inn Select in Columbia on Tuesday. Churchill and Nelson are part of a family and consumer science club at Lange Middle School.
After painting, the students and sponsors delivered the pumpkins to various nursing homes.
"It's fun because we haven't painted pumpkins for awhile, and it's cool that we know where the pumpkins are going," Jefferson Junior High ninth grader Lauren Lambert said.
This is the second year of the event as a part of the Partners-in-Education between the district's Family and Consumer Sciences Department and the Holiday Inn Select. Holiday Inn Select provided the pumpkins, cookies and soda for students at the event. FCCLA is a family and consumer science organization and participates in several activities throughout the school year.
"The partnership between FACS and the Holiday Inn Select has been great. They do so much for us throughout the year," Becky Baugh, FCCLA sponsor and FACS teacher at Oakland Junior High School said.
