NEW LONDON — A northeast Missouri county has been recognized as one of the safest rural counties in America.
Ralls County in the Hannibal area has been dubbed the second-safest rural county by The Progressive Farmer. The magazine considered property crime, burglary, larceny, vehicle theft, robbery and murder risk in making its assessment.
Carroll County, Ohio, was the safest county, according to the magazine. Rounding out the top five were Tipton County, Tenn., Bibb County, Ala., and Boone County, Ind.
Several other counties in northeast Missouri and western Illinois made the magazine's list of the 100 best rural places to live in the Midwest, including Audrain and Marion counties in Missouri and Pike and Adams counties in Illinois.
