O'FALLON — Authorities in St. Charles County were trying to find a man Thursday who is wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old Illinois boy.

At least four public schools were closed for the day, and six Catholic schools placed on lockdown in an area roughly 35 miles outside of St. Louis.

Police were stopping vehicles trying to pass through the search area and looking in the backseats and trunks for any sign of the 27-year-old man, Marcus Powell. They have not identified him as a suspect, but say they want to question him about the case. An investigator said he isn't believed to be armed.

Investigators have said it appeared Delarrian Davis of Madison, Ill., was doing school work inside his home Tuesday when he was killed during a drive-by shooting.

Capt. Brad Wells with the Madison County Sheriff's Department told KSDK-TV that the Major Case Squad, which has been investigating Delarrian's murder, was surveying a Wentzville home where they believed Powell was staying.

A vehicle then left the residence, and police tried to stop it. The driver abandoned the car and ran into a wooded area in Wentzville.

They said Powell was then spotted in a second vehicle headed eastbound on I-70. Wells said the vehicle blew through a police checkpoint, lost control and crashed. Powell then got out of the car and was last seen in the search area in O'Fallon, Mo.
