PrintCOLUMBIA — In an attempt to gauge public opinion for future plans, the Daniel Boone Regional Library Board will hold a series of drop-in sessions for residents of Boone and Callaway counties..
The board is implementing a strategic planning committee to understand what type of services should be provided for the public, Kris Farris, Daniel Boone Regional Library's public relations coordinator, said.
Drop-in sessions will be held at the following locations from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday – Holts Summit, Mid-America Bank
Monday – Ashland, Southern Boone County Public Library
Oct. 22 – Harrisburg, Harrisburg VFW Hall
Oct. 28 – Columbia, Columbia Public Library
Oct. 29 – New Bloomfield, BankStar 1
Oct. 30 – Fulton, Callaway County Public Library
Nov. 3 – Millersburg, Millersburg Christian Church
Nov. 6 – Auxvasse, Auxvasse Elementary
Nov. 10 – Sturgeon, Sturgeon High School
The committee also will review the library's mission, interview civic leaders, assess economic and demographic trends and review data gathered in a 2007 community survey.
From this information, the committee will recommend a strategic plan to the board in January or February in hopes of finalization by March or April, Farris said.
"The old plan was sort of set aside," Farris said.
The old plan, which consisted of the construction of two new branch libraries in Ashland and at the Boone County Fairgrounds, was stopped on April 3, 2007.
A proposed 21-cent tax increase for property owners in the Boone County Library District to finance the construction of the branch libraries was voted down by 73 percent of voters.
As previously reported in the Missourian, the 2007 survey that ensued found some voters thought the project construction costs were too high and the tax increase was too steep, and there was a mistrust of the library board because of past decisions.
"One of the things the survey said is that people wanted more input on the planning," Farris said.
