Autism center planned for southeast Missouri

ST. LOUIS — A new autism center is planned for southeast Missouri will allow families to have their children diagnosed close to home and bring area therapy providers under one roof.

The Southeast Missouri State University Autism Center for Diagnosis and Treatment is scheduled to open next summer in Cape Girardeau.

Interim director Connie Hebert says the new building will be funded with $2.6 million from Gov. Matt Blunt's Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative and about $480,000 in additional government funding for initial operating costs.

Hebert said the university and two organizations that help those with autism — the southeast Missouri office of the Judevine Center for Autism and the Tailor Institute — will work together in the center.
