LETTER: Tigers fans' treatment of visitors embarrassing

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 | 3:10 p.m. CDT

My family attended the MU-Oklahoma State game this past weekend and were appalled at the treatment that we experienced, and that friends of ours also experienced.

My husband and I were in orange for this game; my sister, father, and his girlfriend were in gold. As we were attending the game as a group, we seemed to be somewhat insulated from the nastiness that we saw toward other OSU fans. However, that did not stop groups of male fans screaming obscenities at us, trying to bait us into anger to yell back. We kept our faces forward until we reached the other side of the tunnel. We saw the same being done to other groups of orange-clad fans who did nothing to encourage the behavior.

Friends of ours were also attending the game. They had a significantly worse time when the game started and OSU gained the lead. Food was thrown at them, nasty names and obscenities were yelled, and after the game they were physically threatened by a group of MU fans wielding a baseball bat.

I have been to football games at many other Big 12 venues before and been on both the winning and losing sides. While I have seen trash talk get heated in isolated incidents before, I have never seen, heard or experienced the nastiness that I did at the MU-OSU game. We will never be attending an MU-hosted sporting event ever again because of the unsportsmanlike conduct of your fans.

Hopefully this letter will reach the ears of those willing to address these issues in the future. As a former Missouri resident I have to say I'm a bit ashamed of what I saw.
