LETTER: Prop C increases use of renewable sources

The Renewable Electricity Standard requires Missouri's investor-owned utility companies to produce or buy part of their electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar and biomass, with the amount increasing from 2 percent of sales in 2011 to 15 percent in 2021. On Nov. 4, voters statewide can put Missouri on a path to a cleaner, more sustainable power supply by voting "Yes" on Proposition C.

Twenty-six other states are already reaping economic and environmental benefits of similar laws.  A 2007 Department of Energy study found the majority of renewable capacity added since 1998 occurred in these states.  Mandatory RES laws spur development of new industries and jobs by providing stable, growing markets for renewable energy.

Diversifying power supplies through increased reliance on renewable energy will improve environmental quality and shield customers from volatile fossil fuel prices.

The League of Women Voters of Missouri urges voters to vote "Yes" on Proposition C.
