CLAYTON — A man convicted of shooting two women in the head, killing one of them, is sentenced to 67 years in prison.
A St. Louis County jury last month found 27-year-old Thurman Shelton guilty of involuntary manslaughter and first-degree assault in the March 2007 shootings of his girlfriend, Christina Luckett, and her friend, April Penn.
Luckett died while Penn survived and testified against Shelton.
Jurors decided against the first-degree murder charge, possibly in response to Shelton's claim he shot Luckett by accident and then shot Penn because he panicked.
The jury recommended as few as 30 years in prison, but St. Louis County Circuit Judge Richard Bresnehan decided Friday to impose the maximum penalty of 67 years.
