PrintCOLUMBIA — Betty Anne McCaskill, the first woman on Columbia's City Council, was honored on Tuesday night at a Democratic fundraiser for Chuck Graham. Chris Kelly recognized Betty for smashing the glass ceiling with the Betty Anne McCaskill Glass Ceiling Scholarship, which will be awarded to young women who are active in the Democratic party.
Her daughter, Sen. Claire McCaskill, spoke about her mother at the event.
"She's never met a stranger she's not afraid to work or ask them for their vote," Claire McCaskill said. "When we went out as a family, the kids would always be embarrassed. We would be sitting at a restaurant, and she would ask someone, 'Now, are you voting? Why are you voting like that?' She starts in on people anywhere."
Claire McCaskill said her mother was the type of person who did the work no one else liked to do, including calling people and asking them to help stuff and seal envelopes during campaigns. She said her mother taught her that the most important people are the ones who volunteer their time and energy.
Betty Anne McCaskill had tears in her eyes as she faced the crowd and thanked them for the honor. Claire McCaskill's husband, Joseph, and Betty Anne McCaskill's son, Will, were also in attendance. Claire and Betty Anne McCaskill left the fundraiser, which was held in the ballroom of The Tiger hotel ballroom in downtown Columbia, early for an event in Callaway County.
