COLUMBIA — Police officers found approximately 117 grams of crack cocaine Monday afternoon after a foot chase following a disturbance in the 800 block of Washington Avenue, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
At 1:39 p.m. Monday, police responded to a report of shots fired on Washington Avenue. There, they found a shell casing on the ground. A witness told police they had followed the vehicle believed to be involved in the disturbance from Washington Avenue to the intersection of Bryant and Ash streets, the release said.
When officers arrived, they spotted the men believed to be in the car standing on the back steps of 11 E. Ash St. In the release, police identified the men in the car as Malcolm Redmon, 25, of Kansas City, and Javonte Roy, 17, of Columbia.
When officers got to the house, both men began running and were chased by police, the release said. Redmon hid in the basement and was later removed during a protective sweep of the house. Roy ran out the front door. Police later recovered 117 grams of crack cocaine, which they believe Roy threw to the ground when he began running.
The news release stated that the residents of 11 E. Ash St. were not involved but knew the suspects who had run into the house.
Sgt. Ken Hammond stated in the release that Redmon was arrested on the suspicion of resisting arrest and a parole detainer. The release stated that Redmon was released on parole from the Missouri Department of Corrections on Oct. 17. He was originally serving a prison sentence for trafficking a controlled substance, distribution, delivery and manufacturing a controlled substance, and stealing.
Sgt. Barbara Buck said that later on Monday, Roy turned himself in to police. Roy is being held on suspicion of second-degree assault and armed criminal action.
