CAMERON — Hundreds of northwest Missourians attended a public meeting with a woman made famous by a movie about her successful environmental fight in California.

Erin Brockovich told the crowd at Cameron High School on Monday night that she'll begin her own probe in hopes of finding what caused brain tumors in several northwest Missouri counties.

Brockovich said she received a string of e-mails from patients, not only from the Cameron area but also from people living in other states who had prior local ties.

Earlier this month, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said the number of tumors did not exceed state trends. But residents and some experts believe that the high rate resulted from the former Rockwool Industries insulation plant, which operated in Cameron from 1974 to 1992.
