DONIPHAN — A 21-year-old southeast Missouri man is accused of shooting his father to death and wounding his stepmother, who remains hospitalized.

Bryan Portwood Jr. is charged with murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. He was being held without bond Wednesday at the Doniphan City Jail.

The Ripley County Sheriff's Department says authorities were called to the home where the three lived on Sunday night. Sheriff Ron Barnett said authorities believe the son may have mental disabilities.

Authorities found the father, 44-year-old Bryan Portwood Sr., dead with a gunshot wound to the head. His wife, 28-year-old Jeanna Portwood, also was shot and was in critical condition.

Portwood Jr. was picked up by authorities about an hour later during a traffic stop.
