ST. LOUIS — A former Shriners Hospital executive was sentenced to three years and five months in prison for stealing $828,000 from the suburban St. Louis center that helps sick children.

Robert Brodzin pleaded guilty in August to one felony count of mail fraud. The 41-year-old O'Fallon man was sentenced Friday by a federal judge and agreed to make restitution.

Prosecutors said the thefts began in 2004 and lasted until earlier this year. They say the former director of fiscal services created three fake companies and then presented checks to his supervisors for approval in the companies' names.

A Shriners Hospital administrator says Brodzin's actions ran contrary to its values. The hospital said that Brodzin had no connection with the Shriners fraternity and that his actions should not reflect negatively on its members.
