COLUMBIA — Scott Gibson III was announced Saturday as the new head of Columbia Independent School in a unanimous decision by the school's board of trustees. Gibson is expected to start immediately.
John Thompson, chairman of the board, said in a news release Saturday that Gibson fits the criteria for the position.
"In our search, our objective was to find a leader with significant experience in the international community, an accomplished academician and a well-rounded person with good management skills," Thompson said in the release. "Scott is the leader we need to further the development and expansion of our school."
Gibson was previously a member of the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and later served as headmaster of the Boys' Latin School in Baltimore. He has also served as the headmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, Ala.
Gibson has a degree from Georgetown University and is currently working on a master's degree in business administration at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala.
Gibson was one of almost 40 applicants for the position, a pool that the board of trustees eventually narrowed down to three. After extensive review of the three candidates, Gibson was chosen unanimously, Thompson said.
"We're excited to have a new head of school on board," Thompson said.
