Designated drivers now available for rent in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY — Kansas City-area motorists who expect to drink too much while out on the town can now rent a designated driver.

On Monday, area transit mogul Bill George launched a $25-an-hour service providing a chauffeur-trained and bonded driver to take the wheel for the entire night. " It's definitely cheaper than a DUI,'' George said.

George said he got the idea from his partner in the service, marketing executive Bob Cutler, who was charged with DUI after a crash last year.

Similar services operate in several other U.S. cities, but George's is believed to be the only one in Kansas City.

George is CEO of the Kansas City Transportation Group, whose operations include Yellow Cab and SuperShuttle.

George and Cutler formed Designated Drivers Online and then signed a joint venture with SuperShuttle.
