ST. LOUIS — Transportation officials say the first half of the new I-64 project in St. Louis will reopen Dec. 15, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The second half of the interstate's massive rebuilding in the St. Louis area will begin on the same date.

About five miles of the interstate west of St. Louis has been shut down for construction since January. That section will reopen, and another five-mile section east of the current construction area will close, on Dec. 15.

The highway is a major route that cuts through St. Louis and its western suburbs.

Transportation officials gave an update on the project Friday.

The project involves rebuilding more than 10 miles of highway, bridges and interchanges and widening lanes in some spots.
