COLUMBIA — A man was found lying on the 700 block of Demaret Drive on Saturday morning by Boone County sheriff’s deputies who had responded to a call, according to a department news release.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Ronald Nelson Jr. of Columbia, had been in a one-vehicle accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Though the Sheriff's Department received a call about the accident shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday, investigators think the accident happened around 5:30 a.m., said Sgt. David Alexander.

Deputies determined that Nelson Jr. had been driving west on St. Charles Road at an excessive speed when he struck a curb, which caused the vehicle to overturn. He was ejected from the vehicle, according to the release.

Alexander said alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, but that won't be known until an autopsy is completed.
