ST. JOSEPH — An Overland Park, Kan., hunter apparently drowned in a Buchanan County lake.

The Missouri State Water Patrol said 23-year-old James Adams and a friend from Kansas City were in a boat going across Belcher Branch Lake to a duck hunting spot early Saturday when the boat started taking on water.

The men stayed with the boat for a while before trying to swim to shore. Adams did not make it.

The patrol said a search was under way for Adams' body.
