O'FALLON — Police have released the name of a man who was killed by officers after he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend at a medical center near St. Louis.

The O'Fallon Police Department, in a news release Saturday, identified him as 45-year-old Gary Sheets from Jefferson County.

Sheets was shot after a standoff Friday at St. John's Mercy Urgent Care Center in O'Fallon, about 30 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Authorities say Sheets entered the center, brandished a gun and ordered people to leave. They say he then went to the second floor, where he spent about 90 minutes locked in a room with his ex-girlfriend, Jenenne Meadows, a lab technician at the hospital.

They say that 47-year-old Meadows was shot by Sheets as she ran to the door and unlocked it. A SWAT team then rushed in and shot Sheets.
