LEBANON — An autopsy is being conducted on what authorities believe to be human remains found by hunters in Laclede County over the weekend.

Sheriff's officials were in Springfield for the autopsy Monday, eager to learn more about Saturday's grisly find.

Sheriff Richard Wrinkle said a hunting party found a container in a patch of timber after noticing the smell of decomposition. Wrinkle said the remains were in the container, which weighed about 600 pounds and had an unidentified substance inside.

He declined to identify the type of container or the substance inside.

The sheriff said it apparently was driven to the area and pushed down an embankment, coming to rest against a barbed wire fence.
