COLUMBIA — A fire early Wednesday at 303 Benton St. caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.
After receiving a call at 4:02 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters contained the fire, which was in the attic above a bedroom in the rear of the one-story home, the release stated.
No injuries were sustained in the fire, and firefighters placed large plastic tarps throughout the home to prevent water damage, according to the release. Damage to the home, owned by Dan Johnson, is estimated at $40,000.
Although the home does not have any working smoke detectors installed, David Jackson, who lives in the house, woke up and noticed a “glow” coming from the attic. After discovering the fire, Jackson called 911 and evacuated the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Jackson told fire crews he noticed electrical problems in the home the previous evening, the release said. As of 9:45 a.m., Capt. Eric Hartman said investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were still on the scene.
