Volunteer firefighters complete training course

COLUMBIA — Fourteen volunteer firefighters were scheduled to graduate from recruit training with the Boone County Fire Protection District on Thursday night.

The volunteers successfully completed 266 hours of Firefighter I and Firefighter II training that teaches them all the basic firefighting skills needed in the field, Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp said.

The training is a state-recognized course. They graduates are now qualified to take the test for state certification. Volunteers are assigned to stations throughout the district.

This is the second class of volunteer firefighters to graduate this year, at a time when national recruitment is on a decline, Blomenkamp said. They continue to have more people apply than they are able to accept, he said.

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Boone County Fire District Headquarters where the recruits will take an oath and receive badges. There will also be a slideshow of the training.
