Southeast Missouri town considers pit bull ban

PERRYVILLE — A city council in southeast Missouri is considering banning pit bulls.

Perryville's council hosted a public hearing on the issue on Tuesday. About 30 people attended. Residents who spoke were about evenly split on the proposal.

A draft of the proposed ordinance states that any dog deemed "dangerous" would have to be spayed or neutered in order to remain in city limits, and the owner must maintain a policy of liability insurance to cover any incident with the animal.

But the draft also reads that "it shall be unlawful for any person to own, possess, keep, exercise control over, maintain, harbor, transport, or sell within the city limit any pit bull."

Owners who already have pit bulls would be exempt.
