COLUMBIA — The murder trial of one of the five men charged in the June 10 slaying of a Columbia man was continued Monday in Boone County Circuit Court.

Quillan E. Jacobs, 17, is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action in connection with the slaying of 22-year-old Nathaniel Bentley.

Boone County Circuit Judge Kevin Crane sustained a motion for continuance filed on Nov. 21 by Jacobs' attorney Gerald Mueller.

Jacobs' trial was scheduled for Dec. 2 in Boone County Circuit Judge Kevin Crane's courtroom. A new trial date will be set in early December.

A probable cause statement filed with Boone County Circuit Court recounts the events of the fatal shooting:

On June 10, witnesses told police that five men entered Bentley's home in the Bearfield neighborhood around midnight.

The men went room to room demanding money and property. They then went upstairs and found Bentley. Witnesses reported hearing a struggle and gun shots, according to the statement.

The suspects then left the residence with an X-box game system, two purses and at least one cell phone.

Columbia Police found Bentley with a gunshot wound to his head in the upstairs bedroom. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Four others are charged in connection with the fatal shooting.

Damon A. Williams, 24, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Michael Jaco, 18; Denzel L. Smith, 18; and Malcolm A. Washington, 26, are all charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.
