Traffic officials keep an extra tab on holiday travel

COLUMBIA — Boone County officers made 189 traffic stops Wednesday and counted 214 violations as part of a stepped-up holiday enforcement effort.

Law enforcement officials from six jurisdictions were involved as part of the "Arrive Alive" safety initiative. 

According to a news release by the Columbia Police Department, a total of 10 arrests were made — five for driving with a revoked or suspended license, three for warrants, one for marijuana possession and one for the trafficking of controlled substances. Dogs were used to search four vehicles.

Officers stopped cars for speeding, careless and imprudent driving and other moving violations known to cause accidents.

The detail was enforced by the Columbia, Centralia, Hallsville and MU police departments as well as the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The goal was to have all people “arrive alive” during holiday travels, taking into account the significant increase in the number of vehicles on the road, Sgt. Shelley Jones stated in the release.
