COLUMBIA — A sports car skidded off the road and struck a Columbia home early Friday morning, causing serious damage to the home and injuring the driver.

At 12:55 a.m., Columbia firefighters were called to the home, located at 1513 Rollins Road, to find a 1995 Pontiac Firebird that had crashed through a garage wall and become lodged between the front wall and garage door, a Columbia Fire Department news release said.

The driver was walking around at the scene when emergency crews arrived. He was taken to University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later taken into custody by Columbia police.

Two adults and two children were asleep inside at the time of the accident, but no one was injured, the release said. The home is owned by Doug and Gloria Fowlkes, and damages are estimated at $30,000.

The Columbia Fire Department's Technical Rescue Special Operations Team inspected the home and placed wooden shores inside the damaged garage to keep it from collapsing.

As of 11 a.m. the name of the driver had not been released.
