Mural of train accident aftermath to be dedicated

NEOSHO — A mural reflecting on one of Missouri's worst train accidents is being dedicated next Saturday in Neosho.

The mural depicts a prayer service that was held after a 1914 train crash in Tipton Ford that killed at least 41 people. It will hang at Neosho United Methodist Church.

Many of the victims were members of Neosho's black community. They were headed back home after an Emancipation Day celebration in Joplin.

The communitywide prayer service held a couple of days after the crash drew thousands of black and white parishioners. It is said to have been Newton County's first integrated worship service.

Anthony Benton Gude painted the mural. He is the grandson of late artist and Neosho native Thomas Hart Benton.
