PrintCOLUMBIA — Reports suggest Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen will soon become Wyoming’s next head coach.
Christensen is expected to be named Wyoming’s coach early this week, numerous outlets have reported. Missouri athletic departments officials could not be reached for comment. There is no word whether Christensen will coach the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma on Saturday night in Kansas City or in Missouri’s bowl game.
Saturday night after Missouri’s loss to Kansas, Christensen boarded a chartered flight from Kansas City to Laramie, Wyo., and interviewed with Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman, the Casper Star-Tribune reported.
On Nov. 23, Burman announced the firing of sixth-year coach Joe Glenn, who finished 30-41 overall and with a 15-31 record in Mountain West play. This year, the Cowboys finished 4-8 and scored fewer than 21 points in all but two games.
Last Monday, Burman addressed Wyoming’s offensive difficulties during a teleconference by saying, “We know where we were offensively. We feel like we have better players than that. Offense is important, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to hire an offensive guy. If we do hire a defensive guy, they’re going to have to demonstrate to us a strong commitment to offense.”
Christensen has served as Missouri’s offensive coordinator since joining coach Gary Pinkel in Columbia before the 2001 season. Christensen becomes the first assistant under Pinkel to earn a head-coaching position. Last week, the Toledo Blade reported defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was expected to interview for the open Toledo job on Sunday.
