PrintCOLUMBIA — A fire at a home at 12 Fourth Ave. on Monday evening was likely set intentionally, the Columbia Fire Department said in a news release. The report comes on the heels of the determination that a fire in a duplex on Sunday night was also intentional, but the Fire Department does not believe the two events were related.
At 8:11 p.m. on Monday, firefighters arrived at the home to find smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house, the release said. There was no one in the home, and the fire was under control in less than five minutes. The Columbia Fire Department incorrectly identified the home's address as 412 Fourth Ave. Monday night.
Damage was limited to the back of the house on the exterior, with some damage on the kitchen door and window, according to the release. Property damage was estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.
Investigators ruled out unintentional causes and concluded that the fire was most likely intentionally set, the release said. They are working with the Major Crimes Unit of the Columbia Police Department. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS.
