PrintJEFFERSON CITY — Missouri’s members of the Electoral College have cast their 11 presidential votes for Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Missouri’s electors — one from each congressional district, plus two at-large members — voted Monday at the state Capitol.
McCain won Missouri’s popular vote by 0.13 percentage points over Democrat Barack Obama, making the 2008 race the state’s closest since 1908. McCain now joins Democrat Adlai Stevenson as just the second person in more than a century to win Missouri but lose the White House.
Missouri’s electors were not bound to follow the result of last month’s popular vote. About half the states have passed laws requiring electors to follow the results at the ballot box.

Maybe the Missourian will finally change the wording in the ad for the commemorative front page (www.columbiamissourian.com/p/posters) because Obama was NOT elected by an overwhelming margin in the popular vote: roughly 52 percent to McCain's 46 percent. Hardly a landslide.
The only way that "overwhelming" passes the straight-face test is in the electoral vote, which doesn't accurately -- or, in this and other cases, even remotely -- reflect the popular vote. Of course, McCain and Obama spent more than 98% of their time and money in the 15 states that are home to roughly one-third of the U.S. population. The message: Screw the other two-thirds.
