COLUMBIA — Boone County sheriff's deputies arrested a registered sex offender from Kansas in Columbia late Friday night.

Deputies arrived at 5543 Pinehurst Lane in Columbia at 10:45 p.m. Friday to serve an out-of-state warrant from Johnson County, Kansas, according to a department news release.

The suspect, 36-year-old Joseph Burgin of Columbia, tried to escape out the back door but was met by deputies and was arrested.

Burgin is a registered sex offender in Wyandotte County, Kansas, according to the release.

According to the release, Burgin was taken to the Boone County Jail with bond set at $500 for failure to register as a sex offender, $4,500 for resisting arrest and $14,000 for the Johnson County warrant.

But Capt. Jenny Atwell said Saturday that there is no bond for Burgin's out-of-state warrant and that his total bond is $70,000, cash only.
