KANSAS CITY — Missouri is in a deep freeze, with subzero temperatures common in the northern region of the state and wind chill readings from minus 10 to minus 20 in a few areas.

St. Joseph reported 10 below zero shortly before 6 a.m. Monday, while Kirksville and Chillicothe showed minus 5. Winds diminished overnight, and wind chill warnings were canceled on all but a few eastern Missouri counties but were still below zero.

The National Weather Service said Monday would not be as cold as the weekend, with temperatures rising to around 20 degrees.

Forecasters anticipate ice pellets and light snow Tuesday with temperatures in some areas rising above the freezing mark.
