Control of Kansas City schools debated

 KANSAS CITY — State Rep. Jonas Hughes and others would like to see control of the Kansas City School District handed over to an appointed board of local community leaders.

They say that system would work better than the current elected board setup.

But then it would become a matter of who would appoint such a board.

Hughes, a Kansas City Democrat, acknowledges that the appointment issue will be a challenge, but says it's still an idea worth considering.

Most often, it's the mayor who chooses members for appointed city school boards. That's the case in Chicago. But advocates for an appointed board in Kansas City say confidence in the city's mayoral office is lacking.

They say the Jackson County chief executive's office could possibly do the appointing.
