UNION — A 73-year-old woman has been identified as the wrong-way driver who slammed into another vehicle on Interstate 44 in eastern Missouri on Christmas Day. Both drivers were killed.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said Margaret Mitchell of St. Louis was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when her van collided head-on with a pickup truck Thursday afternoon. Both vehicles burst into flames.
The crash killed Mitchell and the driver of the pickup truck, 20-year-old Cathryn Houlihan of Pacific.
STLToday.com, the Web site for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that Mitchell drove about five miles on the interstate before the crash about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis.
