OREGON, Mo. — A Holt County jail inmate doing time for auto theft is accused of stealing the keys to a patrol car on Christmas night and taking off into Kansas.

Officials say 42-year-old Ross Archer was a model prisoner until he went out to empty the trash and didn’t come back.

Archer was caught just before noon Friday in Eisenhower State Park in Osage County, Kan., and is being held for extradition.

Archer went to empty trash at 10:30 p.m. on Christmas. Officials accuse Archer of stealing a deputy’s keys for the Chevrolet Impala.

Archer is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 7.
