COLLINSVILLE, Ill. — A man considered a person of interest in the death of a Nebraska woman was arrested Saturday after a five-hour standoff at a Collinsville motel.

The standoff started around noon when a man called police, saying he wanted to turn himself in in connection with the death of a woman in Nebraska. Assistant Police Chief David Schneider said the man changed his mind and was later taken into custody after police broke open the door and fired several rounds of bean bags at him for refusing orders from officers.

Collinsville police did not release the man's identity, saying only that he was 44 and wanted for questioning in Nebraska. The Nebraska State Patrol said it wants to question Ronald Smith, 44, in the death of his girlfriend, 51-year-old Terri N. Harris, in Syracuse, Neb.
