KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Wyandotte County Sheriff Leroy Green Jr. says he’s deeply saddened that his 35-year-old son is charged with child sex crimes.

In a written statement issued Tuesday, the sheriff said he “has disqualified himself from any involvement” in the 15-count case against Leroy Green III. The younger Green is charged with nine counts of rape and six counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The sheriff’s statement said that as a father, he is “deeply saddened and disheartened by the charges that have been brought against” his son.

Green is accused of engaging in lewd fondling or sexual intercourse with his victims, all of whom were under the age of 14. The charges allege that the acts began in 2001 and continued until August.

Bond for Green has been set at $1 million.
