Man indicted for "Boonie Hat Bandit" robberies

ST. LOUIS — The well-dressed and elusive man dubbed the "Boonie Hat Bandit" is charged with the robberies of 12 St. Louis-area banks.

Donald Keith Giammanco of Florissant was indicted this week by a federal grand jury on 12 counts of bank robbery.

The indictment alleges that between November 2007 and September 2008, the 45-year-old robbed 12 different banks in the St. Louis area.

Police have said Giammanco got away with more than $100,000. No one was hurt in any of the robberies.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines for each count.

The robber earned the nickname "Boonie Hat Bandit" because he twice wore military-style, floppy-brimmed "Boonie" hats during robberies. He also wore suit jackets or other nice clothing.
