Nathan Garten withdraws from school board race

COLUMBIA — Time constraints have forced one school board candidate to drop out of the race.

Nathan Garten, a senior credit manager at Wells Fargo, filed for candidacy Friday. But after reviewing the informational packet he received upon filing, he said he realized there would be a scheduling conflict and withdrew his application on Monday.

“I expected it (the position) to be mostly evenings and weekends, but there was a lot of daytime commitments, and I am employed full time,” Garten said. “I couldn’t give my full attention to the board or do justice to the voters."

If his schedule were to change in the future, he said he would consider reapplying.

“I still believe the issues and causes are relevant,” Garten said.

Jeannine H. Craig and Michelle Pruitt are currently running for the two open spots on the board.

Applicants have until 5 p.m. Jan. 20 to file in person at 1818 W. Worley St. To be considered for candidacy, applicants must pay taxes in Columbia, be at least 24 years old and be a U.S. citizen.
