PrintCOLUMBIA — Electronics such as computer monitors and cell phones can be turned over for recycling at an event Saturday put on by the 4-H Club at Rock Bridge Elementary School.
The event is from 10 a.m. to noon at the school, 5151 S. Highway 163. The club will accept computer monitors, keyboards, mice, laptops, wires, CPUs, cell phones, printers, fax machines, stereos, TVs, microwaves and copiers. Equipment does not need to be in working condition.
Club leader Beth Van Hove said the purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for the Columbia community to recycle obsolete or unwanted electronics.
“We are
trying to keep unwanted electronics out of landfills,” Van Hove said.
Rock
Bridge 4-H has offered this service to the community three times.
“We had
the first service in January and the second in May 2008,” Van Hove
said. The January event was more successful, she said. "We
think this was in part due to people receiving new electronics for the holidays and needing a place to dispose of their old equipment.”
There is a fee associated with recycling for some
items. Dropping off TVs costs $10 each, and computer monitors,
microwaves and copiers are $5 each. The fees are charged by the Rock
Bridge 4-H Club’s recycling partner, Mid-Mo Recycling.
Mid-Mo Recycling, a
state-certified electronics recycler, will take all collected materials after
the event. All personal information on laptops or hard drives will
be removed before the items are recycled.
