Saturday, January 10, 2009 | 8:50 p.m. CST

The Hickman girls basketball team relied on its defense to beat Waynesville 37-35 on Saturday to win the championship game of the Rolla tournament.

Hickman led until the end of the game when Waynesville was able to tie it at 33. Hickman moved ahead by the final margin with about a minute to play, but Waynesville had the ball, and the Kewpies (5-6) needed a defensive stand to claim the victory.

Hickman's Chastity Prince earned tournament MVP honors and led the Kewpies against Waynesville with 19 points. Nicole Schultz had 9 points for Hickman on 3-of-3 three-point shooting.

Hickman is set to host Kirksville at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
