COLUMBIA — An accident Monday night at the corner of Waco Road and Route B claimed the life of one Columbia man and injured another.

Columbia police said that around 11 p.m., Frederick Ward, 37, pulled out onto Waco Road into the path of a pick-up driven by James E. Prior Jr., 55, who was headed north on Route B.  Prior was unable to stop and hit the passenger side of Ward’s Ford Taurus.

Both drivers had to be cut out of their vehicles by the Columbia Fire Department. Ward was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Prior was also hospitalized, though his injuries were not believed to be life- threatening. Tuesday morning, he was listed in fair condition at University Hospital.

Police said that investigators believe Ward had been drinking and that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, though toxicology test results would be necessary to confirm that suspicion.
