COLUMBIA — City crews will install a new four-way stop at the intersection of Nifong Boulevard and Bearfield Road on Wednesday, according to a news release from the city of Columbia Public Works Department,
The release stated that the four-way stop is being installed to reduce the severity of collisions at the intersection. Six crashes were reported in a 12-month period at the intersection, according to a report in the Dec. 1 City Council agenda.
Minimal delays should be expected during installation, according to Scott Bitterman, supervising engineer of the traffic division at the Public Works Department. Bitterman said that traffic simulations have revealed that an additional 400 gallons of gas will be burned per year as a result of the four-way stop.
The City Council approved this traffic control addition on Jan. 5.
