Nixon asks community colleges not to raise tuition

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri's community colleges have agreed not to raise tuition if they are spared from state budget cuts next year.

Gov. Jay Nixon announced the agreement with the state's two-year higher education institutions on Friday. It follows a similar deal he announced earlier this week with four-year universities.

Nixon's arrangement applies only to the 2010 budget, which starts in July. Colleges and universities still could face state budget cuts during the 2009 fiscal year.

Although Nixon can propose holding higher education spending steady for 2010, that decision ultimately rests with legislators.

Republican legislative leaders have described Nixon's deal as a good goal but have not made a similar pledge to spare higher educations from budget cuts.
