Anonymous donor pays for renovation of Hannibal statue

HANNIBAL — Renovation work is under way on a Missouri landmark.

Work began this week on the Tom and Huck statue site that sits in the historic district of Hannibal, Mark Twain's hometown. Construction crews are placing a new stone foundation around the statue. New landscaping is planned, too.

The project is expected to take about a month.

An anonymous donor is paying for the work. Bleigh Construction, designers Klingner & Associates and stone provider Continental Cement also are donating to the renovation.

The statue is a popular attraction for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit Hannibal each year. But a barricade fence was erected about three years ago after the statue's concrete foundation and the wall behind it were declared unsound.
