LETTER: City shouldn't waste time with wind

Boone county is not suitable for utility scale wind turbines. A wind farm that includes utility scale wind turbines requires a minimum wind power class of category 3. The only part of Missouri that meets this requirement is the extreme Northwest corner. The wind power class of Boone County is category 1, the lowest class. If the city of Columbia is going to increase its dependence on wind power, it is going to have to purchase it from outside the state of Missouri. If the city develops a wind turbine farm in Boone county, it will not generate useful amounts of electricity.

The city of Columbia did not need to spend money evaluating the wind resources of Boone county. The evaluation was already completed using validated methods. The latest high-resolution wind resources map of Missouri is available here.

The methods used to categorize the wind in Missouri are described here.
