PrintSPRINGFIELD — A winter weather advisory for Boone County was updated on Monday night to extend to 6 p.m. Tuesday by the National Weather Service. Columbia residents can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow by Tuesday morning, according to the advisory.
An earlier advisory issued expected snow fall between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday. As of 7:25 p.m. Monday, Joint Communications and the Columbia Police Department said there had been no weather-related incidents or accidents reported.
But in other parts of Missouri, drivers faced treacherous conditions as a winter storm began hitting the state.
The Missouri Highway Patrol troop based in Springfield was working numerous weather-related accidents Monday, several of them with injuries. A radio operator said there had been three fatal crashes, but it was not immediately clear whether they were weather related.
Forecasters said a mix of sleet and freezing drizzle began falling late Monday afternoon, setting up hazardous driving conditions. An ice storm warning will remain in effect until late Tuesday for 10 southwest Missouri counties and part of southeast Kansas.
St. Louis is expected to get 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet by late Tuesday. Elsewhere, snowfall accumulations are expected to range from 1 inch in Kansas City to 2 to 3 inches in central Missouri.
