PrintRolland “Raul” Walters, formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009. He was 68.
Mr. Walters was an influential real estate developer and founded Raul Walters Properties in 1970. Today, the company has offices in Columbia, St. Louis, Las Vegas and Beverly Hills, Calif.
Many of his first developments were in conjunction with Sam Walton: Walters was responsible for building and financing many of the early stores for the Wal-Mart Corp.
Despite relocating to Beverly Hills in 1998, Mr. Walters remained connected to the Columbia community. His developments in Columbia include Columbia Plaza Shopping Center, Crossroads West Shopping Center, Stadium Plaza Shopping Center, The North County Shopping Center and apartment complexes. Walters donated an Olympic-style youth bike trail in Columbia as well as the Walters Boone Country Museum.
Mr. Walters was a member of the Master of Foxhounds and was featured in Sports Illustrated. He was a member of the California Steeple Chase and United Pistol Team, where he was ranked the top U.S. shooter for five years.
Mr. Walters is survived by his wife, Vicki Weir Walters; daughters Wendy Walters and Stacy Walters Cobb; brother Phillip D. Walters; and two grandchildren, Zachary and McKenzie Cobb.
His mother, Lala; his father, Bernard; and his son, Rhett Walters, died earlier.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date, and the family requests privacy at this time.
