KIRKWOOD — The St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood is planning a memorial walkway with six benches to remember those slain in a city hall shooting a year ago.
Charles "Cookie" Thornton shot and killed five Kirkwood officials and police officers in a city hall rampage on the night of Feb. 7, 2008.

Two others, including Mayor Mike Swoboda, were also wounded in the attack. Swoboda died seven months later. His death was ruled a homicide because it was tied to complications from his injuries.
The city's purchasing director, Kim Butts, said Wednesday the walkway will lead from the front of city hall to a nearby park in memory of Sgt. William McEntee, who was shot to death in 2005 in a separate killing.
